We had a similar problem

We have a partitioned server (Windows 2003 64bit) that has both servers set up to start as a service the same way you do. We installed 8.5.3 on just one of the Domino servers and on the reboot, before we could log into Windows, an error box popped up and all it said was "8,26". Once the OS loaded, we tried to start the services manually and we would get the same error popup. The Event Log shows jconsole.exe and scontroller.exe failing.

We ended up reinstalling the version we were using (8.5.2 FP1) and it booted as if nothing had happened. You had posted this after we reinstalled 8.5.2 but I bet had we removed the java console switches it would have worked for us, too.

I feel a little better seeing someone else had an issue yesterday. We did install 8.5.3 on a test server prior to trying a production server (Windows 2008R2 64bit) and it worked perfectly. Hopefully soon we will see a reason/fix for this.
